Saving for travel can be challenging, especially when managing day-to-day expenses. Cash-stuffing or budgeting using the envelope system works for me and has helped me save up in the past. I’ve even made Youtube video’s about it and started an Etsy selling digital goods that can help you if you’re just starting out. Let’s explore how it works and how you can apply it to your travel savings.

How Cash Stuffing Envelopes Works

The cash envelope system involves dividing your budget into specific categories, such as groceries, entertainment, and, most importantly, travel. You then allocate a set amount of cash to each category and place it in a labeled envelope. Once the money in an envelope is gone, you can’t spend any more in that category for the month. This system is designed to help you control your spending by limiting you to the physical cash you’ve set aside.

For travel, create a separate envelope dedicated solely to your travel fund. Every time you get paid, allocate a portion of your income to this envelope. Over time, you’ll see your travel savings grow, bringing you closer to your next adventure.

Advantages of Using the Cash Envelope System

  1. Physical Limitations on Spending: When you only use cash, you’re less likely to overspend. The tangible nature of cash makes it harder to part with compared to swiping a card.
  2. Increased Awareness: The cash envelope system forces you to think about your purchases and prioritize your spending. This mindfulness helps you avoid unnecessary expenses and keeps you focused on your travel savings goal.
  3. Debt Avoidance: Using cash means you won’t rack up credit card debt, which can derail your travel plans if you’re paying off high-interest balances.
  4. Flexibility in Adjusting Budgets: If you realize you’ve over-allocated funds to one category, you can adjust your envelopes accordingly. This flexibility helps you optimize your budget without feeling restricted.

Disadvantages of Using the Cash Envelope System

  1. Inconvenience: Carrying cash can be inconvenient in today’s digital world. Not every purchase is cash-friendly, and it may feel cumbersome to handle physical money.
  2. Lack of Interest: Unlike money saved in a bank account, cash in envelopes doesn’t earn interest. This could be a downside if you’re saving for a long-term travel goal.
  3. Risk of Loss: Cash can be lost or stolen more easily than money stored in a bank account. This risk is something to consider when handling large amounts of cash.
  4. Difficulty in Tracking: While the cash-stuffing system is simple, it doesn’t provide detailed tracking or insights like digital budgeting tools do.

What if I Pay Some of My Expenses Online?

In today’s digital age, some expenses are best handled online, such as subscriptions or bills. You can still use the cash envelope system for these by working towards always being a month ahead in your finances. Some start an envelope for that, while others simply calculate how much their bills cost for one month and when they reach that amount saved begin designating funds to other envelopes. Additionally you can allocate the same amount of money you would have cash-stuffed into a physical envelope and leave it in your account for those online payments. This is what I do as I have things on an autopayment system. I withdraw the amount I have available to spend on things not on an automatic payment and use that to stuff my envelopes with.

Another question I have encountered is that a lot of people put things on a credit card to earn points and wonder if they can use this system. You will create an envelope called “Credit Card” and move the funds into that envelope. At the end of the month, whatever is in Credit Card will be used to pay off your spending.

Another option is to withdraw cash and deposit it into a dedicated account that you only use for online transactions. This way, you’re still mindful of your spending and avoid the temptation to overspend on your travel budget.

What if I Run Out of Money in My Cash Envelope?

If you run out of money in your envelope, don’t panic! This is a signal that you need to reassess your budget. Perhaps you need to cut back in other areas or find additional sources of income. The goal is to avoid dipping into other envelopes or using credit cards to cover the shortfall, as this could derail your savings plan to fund your travel.

Consider it a learning experience. Adjust your budget for the next month and aim to stay within your set limits.

What About Emergencies?

Emergencies happen, and it’s important to have a plan in place. Set aside a separate envelope for emergencies or unexpected expenses. This should be distinct from your travel fund so that an emergency doesn’t eat into your travel savings. Having this safety net ensures that your travel plans remain on track, even when life throws you a curveball.

What if I Have Money Left in My Cash Envelope at the End of the Month?

If you find yourself with leftover money in your travel envelope at the end of the month, congratulations! This is a great opportunity to either roll that money over into next month’s travel budget or deposit it into a savings account dedicated to your travel fund. The extra savings can accelerate your plans or allow for some splurging on your trip.

Conclusion

The cash-stuffing method of budgeting is a powerful tool for saving money and achieving your travel dreams. While it has its challenges, the discipline it instills can help you prioritize your spending and grow your travel fund over time. By staying committed to the cash envelope system, you’ll be better prepared to explore the world without financial stress. Safe travels!
